Christmas songs are some of the most popular songs in the world. Some are religious Christmas songs, and some are not so much. The carols we learned as children not only bring back memories, but they are also easier to sing along to than the newer and more modern ones.

Below we list the most well-known Christmas songs that your whole family and children alike will find familiar and have a good time singing them.

Religious Christmas Songs List

Mary's Boy Child

Mary's Boy Child is a 1956 Christmas song that tells us the story about the birth of Jesus and was written by Jester Hairston. It's a fun melody to sing and an easy way for children to learn about the day when Jesus was born and all who rejoiced.

Away in a Manger

Away in a Manger is a 19th century published song, and it is still widely used throughout the world. This song is about the nativity story, which has to do with when Jesus was born.

Away in a Manger is more focused on Jesus as a baby rather than those who came to honor the new king, making it a great add-on from Mary's Boy Child as it shifts the perspective.

Little Drummer Boy

Little drummer boy was written in 1941 and is one of the most recognized Christmas songs. This song is about a little boy who was beckoned by the Magi to the manger where Jesus was born. Because he did not have a gift for Jesus, he played his drum.

This is a great song to sing as young children often can relate to the boy.

Silent Night

Silent night was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber and Joseph Mohr from Austria. Originally in German, this melancholy song was sung right after the 12-year Napoleonic Wars and had a significant effect. It has then since been declared an important part of our cultural heritage.

Adding Silent Night to your list will bring about remembrance of the peace that eventually came about through Jesus.

Joy to the World

Joy to the world was written by Isaac Watts in 1719. This traditional Christmas song is based on Psalm 98, Psalm 96:11-12, and Genesis 3:17-18.

This song reminds us about the joy the birth of Jesus brought to the world and brings a great sense of happiness to those who sing it.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is one of the oldest Christmas carols composed in 1739. This melody is based on Luke 2:14 and tells about an angelic chorus singing praises to Jesus. This religious Christmas song has easy to sing along lyrics and brings about the majestic feel of angels.

Although there are many, these are the top Christmas Gospel songs on our list. They bring about the perspective of Christmas Day and are a great joy for all to sing.
