Is there a difference between Judah and Israel?

The ancient tribes of Israel were mostly named after Jacob's sons of whom Judah was one. In the time of David, the Jewish people were governed by a united monarchy. This means a king ruled the northern territories called Israel, and another ruled the southern territory which was called Judah.
