The Bible does not specifically name the fir tree (Christmas tree), although in Leviticus 23:40, the branches of leafy trees are associated with rejoicing before the Lord. The fir is an evergreen tree, unchanging like the everlasting life in G_d. Pope John Paul explained the symbolism of the Christmas tree as an ancient custom that exhaults the value of life. When gifts are placed beneath a Christmas tree it represents Christ, G_d’s greatest gift to mankind.
