Is Jerusalem on top of a mountain? Is that why they say you go up to Jerusalem?

The city of Jerusalem stands approximately 2,500 feet above sea level, so if you are going to Jerusalem, you will have to go up. Jerusalem is referred to in the Bible as the “city of God,” “joyful city,” and “Desired one.” Going up to Jerusalem is not just talking about the geographical location. In fact, Jerusalem was the site of God’s temple. “Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord?” Psalm 34:3-5 gives us some conditions to access the holy hill of the Lord (God’s temple). Psalms 120-134 are also regarded as pilgrimage songs, chapter 121 says “I look up to the hill from whence cometh my help.”
