As Joppa is Latinized Jaffa, etymology is not clear. The Hellenistic tradition connected this place to Iopeia, mother of Andromeda, one Roman writer associated this town with Iopa, daughter of the god of the wind. But the first mention of the town is in much older Amarna letters as Iapu. And the last explanation is that it was named after Yafet, one of the sons of Noah.
