Kofi Annan was a Ghanaian civil servant, who was secretary general of the United Nations (UN) between 1997 and 2006. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2001. He was awarded with the United Nations “for their work for a better organised and more peaceful world.” The Nobel committee also recognised his work in containing the spread of the HIV virus in Africa. He died at the age of 80, at a hospital in Bern, Switzerland, after a short illness.
