Why did Mary lay Jesus in a manger in the nativity scene?

Apart from the physical circumstances in Bethlehem, like the lack of lodging during His birth, the manger has enormous spiritual significance. He was to become the King of all humanity, almighty God, reincarnated. Having these humble beginnings, however, He came to both serve humanity and rise to an almighty King.
