Where did the gift-giving tradition in Christmas come from?

Originally, it stems from the roots of the pagan ritual held during the winter. When Christians later folded these rituals into Christmas, the reason for bearing gifts was redirected to the Three Wise Men who gave gifts to Jesus after his birth.
